I went to the hospital today (Wednesday) and you have preconceptions of what you are about to see, hear and smell. These preconceptions are based on past experience, what others have told you and what you may have seen on the telly or in the papers.
You know that smell. Those whitewashed walls, with neutral coloured surroundings. The moans and groans. The intermittent bleeping of the machine at someone’s bedside.
This either rest comfortably with someone or makes them uneasy, which is silly I guess when your supposedly in a safe place.
This hospital I went to seemed different to others. There was no over kill of an iffy disinfectant smell lingering in the corridors, stairwells or wards. Everywhere was bright, airy and clean and the wards were quiet with the beeping machines not even registering their presence with me. And the staff, they seemed happy to be there. A rarity I am sure from what you read and hear.
I don’t know if this hospital is an exception to the rule but if it is all others should take a leaf from their book and maybe the publics’ impressions and opinions of our hospitals will change.
